I wanted to listen to each of the twenty-four before I wrote this review but I keep going back to the ones I’ve heard before. Each time I learn something new, hear something new. Number nineteen, “The Americans,” tells the amazing and spirited stories of John Philip Sousa and George Gershwin with Aaron Copland and Samuel Barber woven in for good measure. The music includes rousing marches, classical jazz and when one is done, one has a sense for the fabric of American music, perhaps even the warp and woof of America itself.

Classical Genius Astounds the Nation’s Capital!

The American Library Association (ALA) held its annual conference in Washington DC, June 22-26, 2007, and Classical Genius amazed the 20,000 attendees! Everyone listening to the audio biographies was impressed with the series and wanted information on purchasing a set for their library. What a wonderful group of people we met and what an incredible response to the Classical Genius series!

Classical Genius will be shown at BookExpo America from 31-Jun 3, 2007. With over 20,000 in attendance, booth 1537 should be full of activity! A 20 minute demo was created to give attendees the flavor of the additive narratives of the composers lives presented in the Classical Genius’ Composer Library.

As children growing up, our parent’s encouraged us to listen to classical music. We, of course, wanted to listen to rock and roll. Listening to the Classical Genius Series exemplfies the fact that the classical composers were every bit the rule breakers. Bach, for instance, shocked the musical world when he had the audacity to include toccata and fugue in D minor to his compositions. Mozart was thrown out of service with Archbishop Colloredo because of his antics. Johann Struass II was arrested for inciting a riot when he included the French national anthem in one of his compositions.

The lives of these composers are told in a fascinating prose, that is both thought provoking and addictive. Listening to the trials and tribulations of these great men will move even the most stoic of listeners. Starvation, diease, and obscurity are just a few of the heartbreaking tales. The friends, lovers and social lives of the composers would make the Rolling Stones green with jealousy.

For anyone who is interested in learning or is deeply involved with
classical music, this is for you. The discs include a narrator who
eloquently tells the life of each composer while in the background we
listen to some of his most well-known compositions. I have listened
to these discs over and over. What a treat!
